Hvar Croatia island Travel Guide: 8 Top things to do- Best restaurants, beaches and beach clubs

This is a Hvar Croatia island Travel Guide: 8 Top things to do- Best restaurants, beaches and beach clubs. If you are wondering what is best to do on a short trip here look below. Find a cost breakdown as well.

Hvar Croatia island : Travel Guide

Hvar is a small island so I would recommend staying here for a few days. A lot of people stop here on boats for sail week/yacht week and head off to another destination.

Accommodation:

If you want to stay on the island I would suggest an Airbnb. Our Airbnb was super central and at a really decent price.

Transport:

Typically to get to Hvar you would take the ferry which costs around 100 Kuna each way from Split. (Around 50 mins). I’d buy this ticket at the port as it was cheaper than buying online.

Food & Drink:

We decided to eat at some of the nicer places we were recommended with dishes at 160 Kuna (18 pounds) or we had lunch in the main square near where the ferry stops with dishes at 80 Kuna (8 pounds).

Activities:

Known to be a party island, so I’d definitely check out the beach clubs. There are quite a few spots and nice bars on different islands that you can get a cheap taxi boat to. I’d ask the locals (like your waiter which we did!). Ask if they know anyone with a boat. We managed to get a private boat which came to 100 Kuna (each for four). This is double the taxi boat price but we had this to ourselves.

Where to stay

The accommodation we chose was an Airbnb literally called ‘The best position in Hvar.’

There are quite a few steep steps but walking down them takes you straight to the city centre (old part of the town)- less than a 3 minute walk! This is also just below the fortress Spanjola.

I picked the apartment as it had breathtaking views of Hvar and the sea (only 100m from the sea). It also had steps up to a private sea view garden. Which had an area to sit and have dinner looking at the view.

This cost just under £40 (just over $50) a night each with four sharing and was probably the best Airbnb I have ever stayed in. As we had luggage the hosts picked us up to drive us to the apartment so we didn’t have to climb up the steps. They decorated the flat with birthday banners/baloons as it was my friends birthday. They even stopped to let us grab food and drink at the supermarket on our way. They called restaraunts/ bars to reserve spots for us as they knew the owners. They kept our luggage stored and came and drove it to us so we could get a later ferry. 5 Stars!

Best restaurants in HVAR ISLAND

1. San Marco- Palace Elisabeth Hvar Heritage Hotel

This restaurant is quite pricey but it has beautiful views of Hvar.

2. Black Pepper

One of the best restaurants on the island. Also recommended by our hosts and by several influencers for dinner.

3. Dalmatino

Not far from Black Pepper this fish and steak house offers you complimentary tasters and brandy as you pick from the menu.

4. Lola Street Food & Bar

The food here is slightly cheaper than the above places I have mentioned. This is  situated near Black Pepper and Dalmatino however this opens a lot later so we did’nt get to try this place out.

5. Laganini Hvar

Next on the Hvar Croatia island Travel Guide: 8 Top things to do- Best restaurants, beaches and beach clubs is visiting Laganini beach club. You’ll need to hire a boat to get here but it isn’t too far and like I mentioned above it’ll cost around 100 Kuna round trip and you could get a private trip. Cheapest cocktails here are 96 Kuna (12 pounds) so this place isn’t exactly cheap but its so pretty and worth a visit. You can also get a bean bag table but for four minimum spend is around 400 euros.

6. Hula Hula Beach Club

On the island and walkable from the centre this is where everyone seems to go for sunset. Because of Covid this place closed at 10pm so the next place to stop off at is Carpe Diem Bar in the centre.

7. Carpe Diem Beach Club

This is a definite place to visit on your list for the day or night. Because of Covid this closed at 10pm so we didn’t go here in the evening. You’ll need to get a boat out here. While Taxi boats are every 20 mins and back every hour we nearly missed our ferry back to Split. In the day it’s beautiful here you can get a sunbed for around 100 Kuna and can stay all day. They have huge pink flamingo floats in the water and some ‘Carpe Diem’ swings in the sea as well.

8. Hire a Yacht

We had a look and saw Hvar-adventure had a 25% discount on. Typically you can do the sunset sailing option for four hour and stop off at the Pakleni islands to snorkel, whilst wine and snacks are included. We called up before and managed to change this for a morning 10am slot and for four of us for our own yacht it cost 78 euros each.  315 euros with discount- which was actually incredible for the size yacht we got and the skipper even served our lunch for us!

What it was like

I absolutely loved Hvar Croatia Island. It has a small town feel similar to Portofino in Italy where everyon knows each other on the island. Its also so nice to just be able to get a boat across to dreamy locations. I’d say its my favourite place in Croatia and up there with favourite place in Europe. Would definitely come back.

Any advice

Transport: I’d definitely try see if you can find anyone locally to help take you to the islands we got such a good deal and could just call the guys to come pick us up.

Cash: Strangely even with Covid a lot of places like Hula Hula were only taking cash so we did have to get more money out here.
