Outfits for a Bali Vacation: What to Pack, What to Ditch, and What Works Best

June 3, 2025

Packing outfits for a Bali vacation can be weirdly confusing. You see people on Instagram in breezy white dresses in rice fields looking unbothered, but the reality?

Within ten minutes, you’re sweating through your clothes, dodging sudden tropical downpours, and wondering why you didn’t just pack linen and leave it at that.

Here’s what works. No fluff. Just things I wore, what I saw others wearing, and what I’ll do differently next time. If you are down for a tasty stop, look no further than Bali’s Best Dessert Spots You Need to Try.

The Weather: Sticky, Hot, and Always a Chance of Rain

Bali is hot and humid all year. It’s a different kind of heat — wet and heavy. Within minutes of stepping outside, you’re sweating.

It also rains unexpectedly, especially during the wet season, and when it rains, it’s intense. It’s not a cute drizzle—more like a monsoon for 40 minutes.

What to do:

  • Pack a light poncho (or grab one at a local Circle K or Indomaret)
  • Wear natural fabrics – linen and cotton only
  • Carry mosquito spray (especially in the evenings) – they’re everywhere

You don’t need a cardigan for evenings — it’s warm even late at night.

👗 What to Wear in Bali

I Packed So Many Bikinis — and That Was the Right Call

I rotated through bikinis every day. Walking around in a bikini top, shorts, or a sarong is regular. Most people do, especially in Canggu and Uluwatu—it’s super laid-back.

Some days, I’d match my bikini to a scrunchie and shorts, then add a bandeau top if I was heading into a café or restaurant.

A few faves:

  • Fae Swim – Bali-based, elevated cuts
  • Ola the Label – minimal and flattering
  • Bikini Market Bali – great for discounted sets from local brands

Linen for the Win

This is your go-to: wide-leg linen trousers, oversized button-ups, beachy co-ord sets—anything that lets air through and doesn’t stick to your skin. You’ll wear it daily.

Shops worth browsing:

  • Les. Basics – staples and light linens
  • Palma – boutique price point but lovely styles
  • The Locals Market Bali often pops up near Canggu and Berawa

Dresses + Flats for Going Out

I mostly went out in short summer dresses and flats. That’s completely normal.

You’ll see some girls in cowboy boots and cut-out dresses (especially at La Favela), but no one is wearing Ibiza glam. You’re on an island — the beach is always right.

A kitten heel or low platform works if you’re heading somewhere like Savaya or The Lawn. But 90% of the time, you’ll be in slides or barefoot at the beach.

Where I wore heels: Savaya, Motel Mexicola, fancier dinners in Uluwatu, that’s it.

Shopping in Bali – It’s Not Cheap Unless You Hit the Markets

For Bali’s affordability, fashion here is surprisingly pricey, especially in Canggu and Seminyak.

Walk into any boutique, and that bikini or linen set is likely £100+. If you’re on a budget or want better value, skip the leading shops and head to the markets.

Best Spot for Local Fashion & Accessories:

  • La Brisa Sunday Market
  • Think curated local stalls: linen co-ords, handmade jewelry, sunglasses, crochet bags, and ceramics.
  • Smaller daily stalls outside boutiques (especially around Berawa) are cheaper and have a mix of local basics and touristy finds.

Pottery, sunglasses, woven bags, and beach cover-ups without boutique markup will be found.

What to Actually Pack for Bali

Here’s the short list of what I’d bring again:

  • 4–5 bikinis (you’ll use them all)
  • Linen trousers, button-ups, co-ords
  • Mini dresses for going out
  • Bandeau tops and comfy bralettes
  • Flat sandals, slides, or platforms
  • Kitten heels (one pair max)
  • Tote bag for beach + market runs
  • Light poncho
  • Mosquito spray
  • SPF 50+ and aftersun
  • Loose long-sleeve top for temples or mosquito-heavy evenings
  • Sunglasses you don’t mind losing

Final Thoughts About Outfits for a Bali Vacation

You don’t need a glam wardrobe for Bali—pack light, breathable pieces you’ll wear in the heat.

Don’t bother with heels unless you’re planning something specific, and forget layering — it’s too hot.

Markets > Boutiques. Linen > Everything else. A bikini and skirt will probably be your default outfit anyway.
