A trip to the Amalfi coast- SORRENTO TRAVEL GUIDE
If you are planning on staying in Sorrento as part of your Amalfi Coast trip then read this post by behindthegram.net. For information on where to stay, what to do and what it was like in Sorrento, read below for the ultimate guide.
We decided to catch a train from Naples to Sorrento as we heard it was a decent stop off point before heading to Positano and Capri. The train journey is an hour long and from there it is only around a 30 minute drive to Positano or a 20/30 minute ferry to Capri from Sorrento. This is definitely a great location to perch in-between travelling around the Amalfi Coast.
Where to stay
We stayed at Hotel Grand Europa at £122 a night.
This hotel we were pleasantly surprised with! It has a beautiful entrance and is only a short walk (9 minutes) from the train station, making our journey from Naples as easy as possible. The set up of breakfast and the dining area boasts of colonial times with white roman statues and you can sit and eat your breakfast outside after selecting items from the buffet. The sea view from breakfast was amazing, we did find it quite entertaining however that the waiters had to spend a lot of their time trying to shoo away the seagulls.
The pool despite how grand, unfortunately was mainly shaded from the sun, they do however have a lift down to the sea where there are sunloungers guest are able to sit at.
What to do
Wine tour: Unfortunately we didn’t have time to do this but apparently there are wine tasting tours nearby eg Villarena Old Cella Nerana Massa Lubrense which are supposed to be a treat!
Boat trip: You can hire a boat and explore for instance Capri for ¾ hours this includes a sandiwch, stopinng off at some of the coves (This doesn’t include the cost of going into the cove though!), if you do this with a group the price is significantly cheaper then the 400 euros we were quoted. If you look for tours in the centre of Sorrento then down by the port you can get a better deal. We were quoted around 90 euros and the day before going managed to secure the tour at 75 euros each.
Restaurants
Lunch:
(1) Hotel Belair Sorrento: This is along one of the most scenic routes in Sorrento but slightly up hill. I’d recommend stopping for lunch as we came for drinks before dinner and it was quite quiet.
(2) Hotel Bellevue Sorrento: A beautiful spot for weddings, this similarly has the view of the sea and is a perfect place to have lunch.
Dinner
(3) O’Parrucchiano Restaurant: This was highly recommended, nestled in lemon grove and lots of flowers. Remember to bring your mosquito spray as a lot of the flowers are real!
(4) The Garden: In the centre of Sorrento this place was really decently priced (Bottle of wine 25 euros!) and has truffle pasta- maybe not so decently priced at 25 euros but this was one of our favourite spots to eat on our whole trip!
WHAT IT WAS LIKE
Sorrento has a small town feel and our hotel was in a great location so we were able to explore the town easily. Sorrento is known as a great place to stay and drive to the other spots along the Amalfi coast as it is better connection by train to Naples and has ferries that connect to Capri and Positano for example. The accommodation appears to be cheaper than the likes of Capri and Positano.
Any advice
Book: We went to head to one of the hotels for lunch but forgot that of course some hotels stop sercing lunch after 2pm so we only managed to have some drinks at Hotel Bellevue Syrene Sorrento. A lot of the restaurants bring free snacks/bread as well which helped tire us over! So make sure to book or check prior.
Public transport: If you haven’t opted to travel around the Amalfi coast in a car, you should be wary
