The Best Beaches to Visit in Rio de Janeiro

March 24, 2025

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is an absolute beauty and known as a dream destination for sun-seekers, with miles of golden coastline, turquoise waters, and vibrant beach culture.

I feel like South/Central America is a spot a lot of people choose to travel to in their latter twenties whereas Asia is the spot for when you are fresh out of university.

Not as cheap as the likes of Bali but still a fraction of the price in the UK. Whether you’re after laid-back vibes, surf-friendly waves, or the best beachfront spots to sip a caipirinha, these top beaches in Rio de Janeiro should be on your travel bucket list.

Things to Know Before Visiting Brazil

Openly using your phone on the streets or at the beach isn’t the best idea. Keep it in a secure bag, and if you need to check directions, step inside a store or use it discreetly.

My friends from Rio made a point of doing this as they’d had their phones stolen several times.

Also, you’ll probably fly into Rio de Janeiro–Galeão International Airport (GIG), which is well connected to the beach zones like Copacabana and Ipanema.

Before diving into the best beaches in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, there are a few important things to know.

While Brazil is an incredible country with friendly people, delicious food, and stunning scenery, you have to be cautious about safety—especially with your phone.

One thing I quickly learned is that having your phone out in public can make you a target. I met so many people who had their phones stolen, even in touristy areas.

That said, I didn’t feel unsafe, but I was extra careful. The key is to stay aware and avoid using your phone openly on the streets or at the beach.

Keep it in a secure bag, and if you need to check directions, step inside a store or use it discreetly. This is just a small adjustment that can make your trip so much smoother.

Uber works well, and traffic canget wild during peak hours or events like Rio de Janeiro Carnival, so give yourself buffer time.

And if you’re new to the city, stick to popular neighborhoods on your Rio de Janeiro map to feel more secure. You can use the underground, it’s a lot quicker just be careful with your phone.

1. Leme Beach – The Local’s Hidden Gem

Tucked away at the end of Copacabana Beach, Leme Beach is where the locals go for a more relaxed atmosphere.

While still close to the action, it feels more peaceful than its famous neighbour and here you see a lot more families at the beach.

Early mornings here are magical and there are spots not too far from the beach where you can grab acai for example.

If you’re into fitness, the Morro do Leme trail offers breathtaking views of the entire coastline.

2. Ipanema Beach – The Trendsetter’s Paradise

A trip to Rio de Janeiro isn’t complete without a visit to Ipanema Beach. Famous for its postcard-perfect views and trendy beachgoers, Ipanema is the place to see and be seen.

Grab an açaí bowl, relax under an umbrella, and watch as locals play beach volleyball or surf the waves. A lot of locals will come up to you with cocktails or acai so you don’t need to wonder into the town.

Sunset at Posto 9 is an absolute must – the sky lights up with the most beautiful hues of pink and orange, making it one of the most Instagram-worthy spots in Brazilian beaches.

If you’re looking for a great spot to wind down after a beach day, Boteco Belmonte Ipanema is just near one of the cutest beach exits in Ipanema.

It’s a classic Brazilian bar with ice-cold chopp (beer)  making it the perfect place to grab a drink while still feeling the ocean breeze. If you want to watch the sunset try head here earlier as there typically is a queue for this spot.

It’s popular, but they do offer you food and drink while you wait in the queue, with empadas. Or you can try the local drink which is very sugary but I loved it.

One thing you’ll notice about Ipanema—especially during Carnival in Rio—is how culturally normal it is for people to walk around in swimsuits, barely covered up, and nobody bats an eye.

The relaxed attitude toward beachwear is part of what makes Rio de Janeiro beach culture so effortlessly cool. It was like nothing I have been used to, even in Bali you’d have comments not here.

3. Copacabana Beach – The Icon of Brazil

No list of the best beaches in Brazil would be complete without Copacabana Beach. With its legendary sidewalk mosaics, buzzing energy, and iconic landscape, Copacabana is the ultimate representation of Brazilian beach life.

It’s perfect for a mix of relaxation and fun – sip on fresh coconut water, take a dip in the ocean, or join a game of footvolley.

By night, the beach transforms into a lively social hub with beachside bars and live music. Again very chilled and extremely busy in carnival.

The beachfront is lined with popular Rio de Janeiro hotels and restaurants—so it’s perfect if you want a vibrant place to stay and still be near everything, from the beach to landmarks like Christ the Redeemer.

4. Recreio Beach – Where Classico Beach Club Calls Home

For those who love a more exclusive Rio de Janeiro beach experience, Recreio Beach is where you’ll find Clássico Beach Club.

Located on one of the most stunning stretches of sand in Rio, this upscale beach club offers delicious cocktails, DJ sets, and luxe sun loungers with an unbeatable ocean view.

Recreio Beach in Rio de Janeiro is also a top pick for surfers, with consistent waves and a more laid-back crowd compared to Ipanema or Copacabana.

I think its the first place I have ever been to which charges a DJ fee at the end.

If you want a beach day that feels elevated (without the extreme price tag), this is your spot.

5. Prainha Beach – A Slice of Paradise for Nature Lovers

If you’re looking for a pristine escape, Prainha Beach in Rio de Janeiro is a hidden treasure. Surrounded by lush Atlantic rainforest, this protected area feels like a secluded paradise.

This is further west and not central but has a beautiful beach and less touristy. With crystal-clear waters and soft white sand, it’s perfect for those who want a break from the city’s hustle. The waves here are good for surfers.

Since it’s a nature reserve, there are fewer beach kiosks – so pack snacks and water for the perfect Brazilian beach day if you want to stay here all day.

They do have some beach bars here, though. The cliffs did mean, however sun was pretty much gone by 4-5 pm when we went in Marc,h so working and coming to the beach after meant we missed tanning time.

LayBack Maquininha Prainha is a great place to get food or drink when you are here, and very slow internet aha.

This relaxed, surfer-friendly spot near Prainha offers amazing food and a chilled vibe, less chaotic than a central Rio de Janeiro beach but an adorable spot nonetheless.

Final Thoughts: Which Brazilian Beach is Right for You?

There are so many cute beaches in Rio de Janeiro; you’ll find a great beach in all areas. Central, as you can imagine, is more hectic. The ones I have provided west of are less touristy.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has the perfect beach for every vibe. From the classic Copacabana experience to the hidden beauty of Prainha, these top Rio beaches showcase the best of Brazil’s coastline.

Whether relaxing at the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, booking a beachfront Rio de Janeiro hotel, or trying to capture the perfect Rio de Janeiro filter moment, each beach brings something unique to the table.
